3rd Grade Behavior/Free Time Policy
Third Graders are expected to follow all school rules and demonstrate respect to adults and fellow students at all times. As a reward for acting appropriately, all third graders will earn a half hour of free time once a cycle. During this time, students will be able to choose and participate in activities with the entire third grade. Some of the options available include outdoor time, crafts, board games, organized games such as 7-Up or Four Corners, etc.
In our classroom we will be using a card system. All students will begin each day on green. If a child engages in behavior that is not appropriate, then the card will be moved to yellow, and five minutes of free time will be lost. In the event a card needs to be pulled again during the same day, the card will be moved to red and another five minutes of free time will be taken. On our free time day, all students that owe time will be in a classroom with a fourth grade teacher. They will be required to complete a summary sheet that will be signed by their parents/guardians explaining why free time was lost, and will reflect on how to assure it doesn’t happen again. After all of the time owed is completed, the students will be able to rejoin the third grade from the remaining free time.
This system will be used from the start of school as well as discussed in class and at Back to School Night. Some behaviors that will result in free time loss include, but are not limited to:
- Incomplete or missing homework
- Off task
- Distracting others
- Calling out
- Disrespectful behavior to adults or peers
