General MusicEach homeroom class receives one general music period per cycle for singing, playing instruments, music appreciation, and general music theory. Individual grade levels can be highlighted in school plays, performances, or programs related to classroom studies.
All students in grades four, five, and six are eligible to play a musical instrument. Each student receives a small group lesson once a cycle, plus a full band rehearsal; fifth grade meets on Day 5 and sixth grade meets on Day 6. Currently, there are about 185 students enrolled in the program, playing a variety of instruments from the woodwind, brass and percussion families.
Enrollment in the instrumental music program takes place in September. Students are responsible for providing their own instrument. The school has an arrangement with a local music company for instrument rentals.
The Mansfield Twp. Elementary School Band participates annually at the community Tree lighting ceremony held at the Mansfield Community Park. In addition, the Sixth Grade Band performs each year for the residents of Homestead. The Fifth Grade Band has the honor of playing for the sixth grade graduation exercises in June. The full band performs at least twice a year at school concerts.
Students in the sixth grade have the opportunity to learn the guitar. Guitar class is held one day a cycle during recess to avoid conflicts with the academic classes. Students need an acoustic guitar to bring to class. The group will perform at a couple of school assemblies.
